To Liberal and back: Weekly update 5
Great running everyone - this week, the club has run 1741 miles in the Olney Runners’ Pancake Challenge!
Our journey so far has already taken us to Liberal, Kansas, and through 5 Olneys, before arriving in Hagerstown, Maryland last week. Since then, we’ve headed back onto the road to run up to New York and catch our flight home. However, we do have enough miles to make a few more detours before we get to JFK...
First stop is another Olney, this time in Maryland. This one is by far the biggest Olney we have run through, acting as a commuter town to Washington DC with a population of 34,000. And it seems there’s good reason that so many people live there - in 2007, it placed number 17 on ‘Money’ magazine’s top 100 places to live in the US! I wonder where our Olney would rank in the UK? Surely number 1?!
Second stop is a town called Mechanicsburg, which is just west of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. Some of you may remember Lee Henwood who used to be an Olney Runner and relocated here a few years ago, so we thought we’d stop by and say hello! As you might expect, Mechanicsburg was given its name after a group of mechanics settled there, but it has also been called a few other interesting names over the years - ‘Drytown’ and ‘Pinchgut’ to name a few!
And so, with those final stops under our belt, we ran back to JFK and boarded our flight home. We’re currently somewhere over the Atlantic, with North America fully behind us - not far to go now.
We’ve now got just under two weeks until Good Friday - let’s see if we can make it home! So, keep running and stay safe!
